Bacteria that Boosts Health

How probiotics can improve well-being
Probiotics are microbial foods and supplements that can improve the balance of bacteria found throughout our digestive tract. The most common families are Lactobacillus (in our upper intestines) and Bifidobacteria (in our colon) although up to 400 species are present.

Balance vs. imbalance

We are constantly exposed to unfriendly bacteria through our diet and environment. Usually our beneficial internal flora are present in sufficient quantities to combat these and avoid illness. But if this balance is upset, as through the consumption of excessive unhealthy foods, alcohol, smoking and drugs, our friendly bacteria suffer and the unfriendly can take over. The results can vary - from bloating and gas to diarrhea or constipation. Our immunity can suffer and the risks of serious illness increase.

Antibiotics mean anti-life

Antibiotics also affect our internal flora. Although antibiotics can address bacterial infections, they are broad-spectrum and kill friendly as well as unfriendly bacteria. If we don't replenish the beneficial bacteria, we are at risk of invasion by even more harmful species.

Improve digestion

Our bacterial balance is vital for a healthy digestive system. Bacteria help us break down our foods and avoid uncomfortable symptoms common with poor digestion. These include bloating and flatulence due to gas formed by fermenting foods. A healthy balance of friendly bacteria reduces fermentation, easing these problems.

Regulate stool

Another common symptom if our balance is upset is traveler's tummy, or diarrhea. This happens when our body reacts to foreign bacteria and tries to get rid of them. We may become constipated although diarrhea is more common. Probiotic supplementation can help as they directly compete with the unfriendly bacteria and help restore balance.

Probiotics produce nutrients

Our friendly bacteria also enhance our health by producing nutrients. These include vitamins, healthy fats and protein in a form that we can easily digest and absorb. Vitamin B12 and folic acid are two examples which supplement our dietary requirements.

Boost immunity

Healthy gut flora are an important element of our immune system. They act by directly combating harmful bacteria which compete for nutrients and space. This protects us from overgrowth of harmful bacteria and yeasts. Friendly flora also induce many enzymatic activities which catalyze our immune response.

Support friendly bacteria

Our beneficial bacteria thrive on the same foods that all elements of health do - fruits, vegetables and their fibers. Maintaining a diet rich in these and minimizing animal products and processed foods will assist in maintaining an optimal balance.

Probiotic supplementation

Taking a probiotic supplement can restore and support health. A broad-spectrum blend which includes several species is best. The exact count of bacteria contained is also important for potency and effectiveness. A balance of Lactobacillus and Bifidus species will support our entire digestive tract.

Condition specific

As we age and change so does our internal balance and this is also affected by specific conditions and exposure to unfriendly bacteria. Thus it is helpful to choose a probiotic which best suits your needs. For example babies need a specific species of Bifidus for infants, whereas people suffering from traveler's diarrhea can benefit from a higher dose of a broad-spectrum probiotic. Adults over 50 have a natural decrease in Bifidus and can benefit from adding more to their diet.

Focus on supporting the balance of healthy intestinal flora. A nutritious fiber-rich diet and regular supplementation with a good probiotic will provide a healthy lift. Maintaining a good level of beneficial bacteria improves digestion, boosts immunity, and enhances overall health.
