What is a Balinese massage?
Traditional Balinese massage uses a combination of acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and 'qi' (energy) around your body, bringing deep relaxation and wellness. It can be rigorous, since the masseuse will use skin-rolling, acupressure and reflexology. Throughout the massage aromatherapy oils are used to soothe you. Deep pressure manipulation with medium-depth strokes and pressure points is used to reach below the superficial muscle layers. This massage helps to balance the energy centers and improve the integration of your internal systems. The stretching techniques also help with sore spots and old injuries.
Before you go
Before any massage, it is good to both physically and mentally prepare. The day before, drink lots of water, avoid caffeine and eat light. Arrive at the spa about an hour before your scheduled massage, and sit in the sauna or steam room. This will relax your muscles open your pores, and ease your mind. The oils used could stain your clothes, so wear something old if you don’t plan on showering before leaving.
What to expect
The massage room should be softly lit, with aromatherapy candles to relax you. Depending on the masseuse, you most likely will start this massage laying face down on a table. Before beginning, make sure to tell the masseuse if you:
- Are, or think you might be, pregnant
- Have joint or limb pain
- Have recently had surgery or any other injury
- Have any other medical conditions or are receiving any form of treatment
Any of these conditions may affect the kind of oils and massage that is appropriate for you.
This massage is administered using blended oil properties that help relieve muscular tension, and balance subtle energies for a heightened sense of well-being. Different oils are used throughout, all pleasing to the senses, and relaxing for the skin and muscles. After awhile, you will be asked to turn over on your back. After stretching and pulling the legs and muscles, the masseuse will focus on the abdominal area, and use circular techniques to balance your 'qi'. At the conclusion of the massage, the masseuse will gradually rouse you by gently cupping your ears with their hands, making a slight popping sound to bring your mind back to the present. When you are ready, you can get up.
How often?
Doing something good for our body makes us feel happy and positively affects our mind. Traditional Balinese Massage is recommended once or twice a week (especially while doing a detox program), or as often as possible. This massage enhances detox because the deep tissue techniques stimulate blood flow to the lymphatic system, which is responsible for removing wastes and toxins from our body.
