Our largest organ is our skin. It’s also one of the most important detox channels for our body, supporting the colon to purify toxins.
The pH level of soaps, moisturizers and deodorants, as well as synthetic fibers found in clothing cause toxins to accumulate under the skin which contributes to numerous skin problems. This can be avoided by choosing natural, organic skin care products instead of synthetic products. We can also add a simple but effective step to our daily skin care routine – dry skin brushing.
Benefits of dry skin brushing Dry skin brushing improves lymphatic circulation which helps remove wastes that are built up in our lymph nodes. It increases blood circulation and opens pores which helps remove metabolic wastes.
Dry skin brushing revives the nervous system. It strengthens the immune system and speeds recovery when we start to feel sick or run down.
Because dry skin brushing increases blood circulation, it has a positive electromagnetic effect on the body, helps our skin breathe better. It also prevents varicose veins. Skin brushing daily firms skin which removes cellulite, increases cellular renewal, improves communication between cells and stimulates hormonal and oil glands - all of which help our body function at its best.
How to use a dry skin brush? Buy a natural, not synthetic brush, with a long handle so you can reach every area of your body. Brush at least once a day before bathing, and ideally twice a day. Use on dry skin. Brushing when your skin is wet doesn’t have the same effect, and can stretch the skin. Start by brushing the soles of your feet because the nerve endings there affect your whole body. Next brush your ankles, calves and thighs. Brush across your stomach and your buttocks. Finish off by brushing your hands and arms. Always brush toward your heart. Do lighter strokes over and around your breasts, but do not brush your nipples. Do circular counter-clockwise strokes on your abdomen. Brush each part of your body several times thoroughly and vigorously, making sure you brush your whole body. Always take a warm shower after brushing and finish off with cold water. The shower will help remove uric acid and dead skin that results from brushing, while the cold water helps increase circulation. Wash your brush every two weeks in water and let it dry thoroughly before using again.
