What is feng shui? Feng shui is an ancient Chinese energy practice that teaches how to enhance and attract positive chi, or energy. This Eastern philosophy believes that by managing the chi in your environment you can improve your fortune. It focuses first on minimizing bad chi, then applying practices that can bring good chi. Feng means wind and shui means water, which are associated with good health and therefore good fortune in Chinese culture. Feng shui is based on the Taoist idea that the land is alive and filled with chi. The theories of yin and yang, as well as the five elements (water, wood, metal, earth and fire), are some of the basic aspects of a feng shui analysis that come from Taoism. The main tools used in feng shui are a compass and the ba-gua - an octagonal grid that helps determine which areas of your home correspond to nine key areas of your life. How to apply feng shui You don’t need to be a feng shui master to benefit from this ancient philosophy. Try the following simple practices and you’ll notice an improvement in your own energy and health levels. Clear clutter: Clutter blocks the flow of energy. Clearing out your space and getting rid of broken items or things you don’t need will create more room for energy. Have good quality air and light: Allow as much natural light as possible into your home. To clear the air, open windows often and use an air purifier. Wash your windows: Windows are considered the ‘eyes of the home’. If you’re not thinking clearly, make sure your windows, glass doors, computer and television screens are clean. Leave space between furniture: Arranging furniture so there is at least 3 feet of space between each piece encourages the flow of energy. Clean your front door: The main entry into your home is also the entryway for energy. Make sure your door is clean and well-maintained. Don’t block the door. Check your bed position: Your head should be exposed to as much good energy as possible while you sleep. Don’t arrange you bed so your head is near the door as this will give you a less restful sleep. Remove electronics: Computers, television and exercise equipment all use up energy, including the revitalizing energy you need when you sleep. Remove these from the bedroom and minimize the amount of electrical devices where you sleep. Bathroom: One of the main features of a bathroom is drains, which pull energy down and away. Keep the toilet lid down as much as possible and the bathroom door shut.
