Have Fun and Still Stay Healthy!

In spite of the many inviting meals and endless nights, keeping healthy in summer is much easier than in winter. Thanks to the abundance of fruits and vegetables that Mother Nature shares with us in summer, making healthy choices is easier so you don’t need to miss out on the fun of summer. Here are a few tips you can use throughout the season.

No need to say ‘no’ to dinner invitations

While preparing tasty meats to grill ask your friends to prepare a shish kebab with flavorful summer veggies. Enjoy them with some salad greens drizzled with olive oil for a tasty light evening meal, which won’t make you miss out on the fun.

Mother Nature at work

Summer is the season when nature is the most generous. All the flavors that were missing in winter are now at your table waiting for you to taste them. Try drinking fresh pressed fruit and vegetable juices throughout the day or freezing them to make your own sorbet. Enjoy with fresh vegetables with light dips for a healthy and delicious meal.

Don’t forget water

Thirst is a late warning sign from your body of dehydration. That means you’ve been dehydrated for a long time before you become aware of it. On hot days when you body is losing more water and toxins remember to refuel by drinking plenty of water. You can flavor your water with lemon, tangerine and grapes. By replacing one soda or sugar-filled drink with water each day you can cut out over 50,000 calories per year and avoid illnesses such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Make friends with the bartender!

For a healthier lifestyle, you should limit the amount of alcohol you drink. But making healthy choices doesn’t mean you can't enjoy a night out. Encourage the bartender to create unique alcohol-free cocktails for you.

Use your secret weapons

Many foods are available during summer that can help you lose weight in a healthy way. Consider them your secret weapons and keep them nearby throughout the day and night. For example, apples are a rich source of fiber and research has shown that the more you chew almonds, carrots and cucumber the fuller you will feel.

The 75-25 rule

Whether on vacation or at home, keep the 75-25 rule in mind. Spoil yourself with 25% of what you eat, and to help keep your body in balance make healthy choices for the remaining 75%. If you want to eat meat or similar foods, be sure to eat plenty of veggies too; for every glass of alcohol you drink be sure to drink at least one glass of water.
