When working correctly, our body’s T cells and natural fighting cells, the immune system’s building blocks, are able to fight against infiltrating illnesses. But exposure to stress causes them to lose the ability to fight and even stay alive. As a result, over time our body becomes more susceptible to illness and starts to develop a more acidic environment.
This change as a result of a weakened immune system can lead to cardiovascular disease, colds, throat infections, nervous system illnesses, ulcers, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, impotence, and tooth decay. Hormones that are released as a response to stress can have a negative chronic affect on the body’s natural balance.
Although we can’t escape the effects of modern stress on our lives, we can strengthen our immune system and prepare ourselves for the side effects of stress on our body, mind and spirit.
Try these tips to reduce the side effects of stress:
Eat a diet with plenty of nutrient-rich living foods such as whole grains, vegetables and fruits, omega-3 fatty acids which reduce stress and vitamin C which strengthens immune cells.
Try to do activities such as yoga or tai chi which relax and calm the body, mind and spirit.
Exercise regularly to increase the release of endorphins – the happiness hormones that also strengthen immune cells.
Meditate to cleanse negative thoughts that preoccupy your mind.
Reduce your exposure to harmful radio frequencies in your environment from mobile phones, computers and electrical appliances.
Learn techniques on how to breathe properly and use the positive energy of your breath at stressful moments. Be sure the air you breathe is clean and good quality.
Determine your priorities and put yourself at the top of the list.
Stress can affect our lives in many ways and every stressor steals from our body and immune system. Eustress (also known as positive stress) in our lives should be managed in an optimal way and can be used to better cope with things that happen in our daily life. Unlike negative, chronic stress, eustress strengthens both the immune and nervous systems. For better health and a stronger immune system, pay attention to the quality and form that stress takes in your life and use stress in the most effective way.
