Cellulite: Shed It Naturally
When it comes to stepping out in a bathing suit or shorts, would you rather remain under cover? If you're like many women (and some men) cellulite can make you feel less than confident about your body. Find out where this culprit comes from and natural ways to return to smooth and supple skin.

What is cellulite?

Lumpy, dimpled skin is caused by a combination of fat, water and fibrous tissue. This migrates up through our layers of skin due to a weakening of cell membranes and loss of water in our cells. The fat and water get trapped within the fibrous tissue creating that orange peel look. Reduced circulation often cuts down both nutrient delivery and waste removal from the affected areas, further adding to the problem.

Why does it occur?

Cellulite is partly genetic but is largely influenced by our diet and lifestyle. Poor dietary habits cause fat gain. Not drinking enough water or using diuretics such as coffee, soft drinks and alcohol damage cell membranes and dehydrate cells. A lack of exercise and sweating compromises circulation and detoxification.

Cellulite can be addressed through a combination of easy steps:

Bring in the new

A diet rich in fruit and vegetables provides the nutrients our body needs to restore, rehydrate and revitalize our cells. Raw produce provides enzymes to enhance our body's restoration activities and preserves the water content which rehydrates cells. The high water and fiber contents of these foods will also correct constipation which contributes to cellulite as wastes build up.

Throw out the old

Animal proteins, refined and junk foods are high in harmful fats, salt and additives that contribute to the development of cellulite. They are extremely hard for our body to use and eliminate, and their residues clog and inflame local tissues and circulation. Reducing or eliminating these from your diet will provide a solid platform to start restoring smooth, healthy skin.

Heal cell membranes

Nuts and seeds are rich in essential amino acids, fatty acids and phospholipids - nutrients which provide the structure of all cell membranes. Including these in your diet will help your body rebuild and restore cell membranes and prevent water loss. Great sources are sunflower and pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds and nuts including almonds and Brazil nuts. Tomatoes, spinach and sea vegetables are other good sources. The walls of our arteries, veins and capillaries will also benefit, improving both nutrient delivery and waste removal from affected areas.

Rehydrate

Good water intake is vital in restoring cellular fluids. Drink at least 2 liters a day and cut back on coffee, soft drinks and alcohol. These have diuretic effects, leave toxic residues and dehydrate cells.

Skin elasticity through food

Vitamin C, zinc and silica all improve the elasticity of our skin. Whole foods are always better sources than supplements as their nutrients are more easily absorbed. The majority of fruits and vegetables are rich in Vitamin C. Zinc is found in pumpkin and watermelon seeds, Brazil nuts and nettle root. Oats, cucumber and other vegetables are rich in silica. Essential fats, found in raw seeds, nuts and cold-pressed oils also help metabolize saturated and damaged fats.

Move it

Exercise is vital for stimulating circulation, raising body temperature and sweating. Increased circulation will bring nutrients to where they are needed, while raising body temperature and sweating actually soften fat and help its metabolism and elimination.

Slather it on

Topical applications of foods which stimulate circulation can help, especially spices such as cayenne pepper or ginger. Try these treatments:

  • Cayenne-Kelp Poultice: Mix 5 gm (1tsp) cayenne pepper, 10gm (2tsp) kelp powder and enough olive or castor oil to form a paste. Spread on a bandage and apply with a hot pack to increase effectiveness.  Note: Chili can burn the skin so start with short applications and check regularly.
  • Ginger Bath: Add 2 Tbsp fresh grated or powdered ginger and 1 cup Epsom salts to a hot bath and soak for 30 minutes. Stimulate affected areas with a cellulite brush.

Massage

Massage increases circulation, breaks down and softens fibrous tissues which trap fat and toxins and result from the immune response to unhealthy foods. The affected area should be massaged or rubbed with a cellulite brush on a regular basis as the effects are cumulative.

Seaweed

Seaweed is highly nutritious and detoxifying. Many varieties are rich in elements that help soften fibrous tissues. Try regular seaweed body wraps and include seaweed in your diet.

Saunas

Saunas and Far Infrared Saunas are useful in reducing cellulite. The fatty elements of cellulite soften in the heat, allowing it to melt away and be metabolized in the body.

Cellulite can be addressed in a similar way to normal body fat as the causes are similar. Diet, fluids and exercise are the key to combating it, while massage, wraps and saunas are a valuable addition. Take a holistic approach by using a variety of treatments that appeal to you most. When you take control of your body, you'll soon regain the confidence to show it off!
