Simple Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

On April 22nd, 174 countries, 12,000 organizations and millions of people will celebrate Earth Day turning 40. On this day try contributing to nature, who continuously shares her abundance with all beings on the planet, by adding these simple and natural solutions your life.

Grow ‘edible’ plants

If the warmer spring days and budding trees are tempting you to do some gardening, instead of sowing the usual summer flowers like petunias and violets, try growing edible plants such as tomatoes. You’ll get in touch with your inner gardener and you will enjoy growing your own produce in the healthiest way possible. If you have a large garden, instead of shade trees you can plant fruit-bearing ones using organic fertilizer and soil.

Adopt a local seed

Collect and store local seeds which haven’t been genetically modified, are in total harmony with the environment they grow in and are part of an ecosystem. When planting season returns, reunite them with the earth. By taking ownership of your native seeds, you take a stand against genetically modified foods.

Say goodbye to your car

Mark Earth Day on April 22nd by leaving your car at home the entire day and walking, biking or car pooling. If you enjoy it, you can try travelling this way regularly, at least for a few days a week.

Start a ‘green revolution’ with your eating habits

It’s no coincidence that the healthiest foods are also the most natural. For a month following Earth Day, try to buy only foods that are natural, organic, non-genetically modified and have a high concentration of nutrients. Replace basic foods you can’t do without with healthier options, and include more superfoods in your diet. You can be certain this health experiment will create positive habits that you won’t be able to easily break.

Choose green gifts

For occasions beyond Earth Day like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and birthdays, choosing gifts that are in balance with nature can be original and make a difference, even if it’s on a small scale. There are many novel environmentally-friendly gifts such as wooden toys that don’t contain toxic chemicals for the little ones, jewelry made from recycled materials or chemical-free cosmetics for Mom, a massage for Dad, and recycled wrapping paper. If you want to go one step further, you can even adopt a near-extinct animal and name it after your loved one!

Protect your water

Pay attention to one of the most important messages communicated each Earth Day and conserve water. Learn what you can do to save clean water and recycle the water run-off from your faucets in a healthy way.
