Also known as Thai yoga massage, traditional Thai massage is a highly therapeutic staple of Thai medicine, which offers a holistic way to balance the body, heart, mind and spirit. More energizing than classic forms of massage, Thai massage increases flexibility, releases deep-seated tension and increases the body’s natural energy flow.
What is traditional Thai Massage?
Employing their own body, the therapist uses their hands, feet, legs, elbows and knees to slowly and gently move your body through a series of stretches and poses. The experience is much like an intense yoga session without exerting the effort yourself!
What to expect
Performed on a mat on the floor rather than a raised table, Thai massage allows the therapist to use their body, rather then muscular force, most effectively. The massage is done without oils and it is important that you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes. Starting at your feet, the therapist slowly works their way around your body, pulling, kneading and pressing to loosen your muscles. By relaxing and letting the therapist manipulate your body, you are stretched into many yoga-like positions. The massage also makes use of muscle compression, joint mobilization and acupressure. Applying pressure to the body’s energy lines and points, combined with the stretching motions, results in increased flexibility, as well as the release of tension stored deep within the muscles. After the massage the body is more in balance with energy blockages removed. A short massage will last for 75 minutes, while the full experience can last from 90-120 minutes.
Before you go
As with any massage therapy, avoid caffeine, make sure to drink extra water and eat lightly the day before. It is a good idea to arrive early and enjoy a sauna or steam bath prior to the massage in order to loosen up your muscles and let you begin to let go of built up stress. Check if you will be provided with appropriate clothing for the session or bring your own loose, comfortable clothes to wear during the massage.
Massage is a wonderful way to relax and release toxins and tension during a detox program. It is also a wonderful way to pamper your whole being. The benefits to your body include better blood flow to your lymphatic system, which in turn assists in expelling toxins and wastes from the body. By releasing built up tension that has accumulated over time, you restore your mind-body connection. If you are already regularly doing Pilates or yoga, having a Thai massage weekly will increase your flexibility and performance. After a Thai massage you will feel at peace, yet filled with positive, creative energy. In addition, your body will be more flexible and your range of motion will be greatly improved.
For best results and maximum benefits, it is advised to have a Thai massage at least once a week. Who can resist getting the stretching and flexibility of a good yoga routine without the effort? Just lie back, let your body completely relax and feel the stress melt away as you help restore your well-being!
