Winter Weight Gain

As the temperature outside drops, we start dreading the extra weight we know we’ll put on in winter.  There are many reasons why we tend to gain weight during colder months, some due to lifestyle and others due to our biological make-up. But there are some easy ways to enjoy the season without packing on the pounds.

The reason we gain weight is that we burn fewer calories than we consume. Several factors, including biological, emotional, environmental and social reasons, influence our weight throughout the year, and intensify this equation during winter.

Less exercise

When temperatures drop, we tend to stay indoors more. Shorter days also mean less opportunity to get outside during daylight hours. As a result, our metabolism – and the amount of calories we burn – slows down. But the best way to burn calories is to exercise.

Calorie-rich winter treats

As we’re cocooning at home, we tend to reach for comfort foods that are high in fat, carbohydrates and simple sugars to lift our mood.  End-of-year parties and holidays offer some of our favorite treats and other high-calorie goodies. Lighter, water-rich foods of summer such as watermelon and peaches are not in season, so we snack on foods that are more fattening.

Biology plays a part

Our body tries to hang onto the extra insulation (fat) during the colder months because traditionally, being able to keep warm with those few extra pounds helped keep us alive. The hormone CCK tells the brain when we’re full, but in fall and winter it’s suppressed, making us want to eat more. Research also shows that a slight increase in weight increases immune function as well. Although we now have other ways to protect ourselves such as indoor heating and plenty of warm clothing, and that extra weight is no longer necessary, nature still works to protect us.

Battle the bulge

The good news is we can keep the winter bulge at bay – try these simple tips:

  • Keep active: Exercise is the best way to fight against weight gain. Try fun cold-weather activities such as sledding or enjoy the beauty of a walk in the rain. If it’s miserable outside, do yoga, go for a power walk in the mall or jump on a trampoline.
  • Get some sunlight: Many people suffer depression during winter due to lack of sunlight. Getting outside for at least half an hour can improve your mood and keep you from reaching for fattening treats to boost your spirits.
  • Start a hobby: Activities such as knitting or playing the guitar will help reduce stress hormones which help keep weight on. Keeping your hands busy will also give them less opportunity to reach for snacks!
  • Eat the season’s bounty:  Nutrient-dense winter fruits and vegetables have vitamins, minerals and fiber needed to boost our immunity and keep our digestive tract running well. Get creative in the kitchen with cleansing beet or squash, which is rich in vitamins A and C!
