Flexibility is affected by our age and activity level. Athletes may require high levels to compete but for all of us being able to perform every day tasks with ease is important. Flexibility is an often neglected aspect of health and fitness that many of us see as unimportant due to its passive nature.
Muscles are like rubber bands
The stronger they get, or tighter when not used, the less they give. Without regular stretching range of movement around joints can be restricted affecting daily activities and even quality of life. Our posture is impaired by muscle imbalances and reduced flexibility. The resulting strain on joints and vertebrae can lead to discomfort, pain and perhaps long term disability.
Stretching can relieve pain
A well-planned flexibility program eases tension around joints. This reduces chance of injury from muscle strength imbalances and reverses gradual loss of flexibility, a consequence of aging. Lower back pain and other muscular and joint problems can also be relieved.
Stretching increases production of glycoaminoglycans - gel-like substances which help prevent muscle fibers sticking together, assisting fuller, pain-free range of movement. Glycoaminoglycans also help repair collagen which protects and cushions joints. This reduces friction and inflammation from bone surfaces rubbing together as in forms of arthritis.
A tense body, a tense mind
Stretching also supports stress management as physical and psychological tensions are closely linked. Specific stretches can ease tension headaches caused by reduced blood flow to and from the head, a result of excessively tight neck muscles. Many people also hold stress in their pelvic region. Easing tension in this important link between our upper and lower body will relieve stress caused by chronic pain.
